Who doesn’t love September!? The days are longer, the weather is warmer and everything smells AMMMAZZING! We’ve really made the most of September this year... playing at open mics every week, celebrating our birthdays and squeezing in a fricken’ awesome camping trip to Wilsons Prom.

OPEN MIC NIGHTS

Melbourne’s open mic scene is really great. There are several open mics on every night of the week all over Melbourne, so it’s really easy to find one that fits your schedule. Most of them offer 15-minute slots which is perfect for smashing out three songs. For most of September we’ve been challenging ourselves to play once a week, hoping to build more performance experience and practice our repertoire. It has proved to be so beneficial and we are feeling increasingly confident each time we get up and play. We’ve had really positive feedback from the audience and other musicians which has been very rewarding and reassuring! It feels like each time we walk into an open mic venue, we are walking into a small community of musicians. Each venue has a different vibe and the same group of regulars. It has been a lot of fun becoming a part of this open mic culture.

Franny:

Playing at open mics is really helping me to overcome the worst of my performance anxiety. I still get nervous, but I am able to control the snowballing and have so far not made any mistakes! The feedback from the audience has been so amazing and really motivates us to keep going. People seem to genuinely enjoy our music and that is probably the most rewarding part of what we do with our music.

Zooey:

I have loved performing more regularly. I feel so invigorated and inspired each time we play. Having 15 minutes of air time feels much more manageable then an hour set and it has allowed us to really hone in on three songs at a time. I’m really proud of our efforts and can’t wait to see where this takes us!

BIRTHDAY SHENANIGANS

Our birthdays are nine days apart, so September really does feel like a bit of a party. We both managed to get away for our birthdays this year and spent some time unwinding.

Franny:

For my birthday, my lovely man, Tomer, whisked me away to spend a night in Lorne. Just spending one night away was so refreshing and relaxing. It’s really important to take time for yourself and pace the busy aspects of life. I feel like this year has been a bit go, go go and not necessarily in aspects where I would like things to be excelling. So taking a night away for just the two of us was perfect.

For the long weekend we ducked down to Wilsons Prom to camp, hike, swim, and relax. What a weekend it was! I find camping soooo relaxing. It really gives me an opportunity to chill out and be in the moment, which I find really to do in my day to day life. The Prom is the perfect place for this. It has been a prominent (no pun intended!) holiday destination for our family for a few generations, so it is particularly special to us. We spent 4 nights at Tidal River soaking in the scenery, taking walks along the beach and gazing at beautiful starry skies. We ate, played games, laughed, drank, danced and generally had a damn good time. The last day of our trip was my birthday. As per tradition we went on a hike, this time up Mount Oberon where we were met with stunning views. What a perfect way to spend a birthday.

NEW PROJECTS

We have some exciting projects lined up for the rest of the year which we can’t wait to share with you. We are in the process of recording new material, writing new material and working hard on our upcoming single. The other project we have implemented is a youtube channel. We are creating a series of vlogs which we really hope will introduce people to a more authentic us, weird quirks and all! You see, we love writing deep and meaningful songs, but that’s only one aspect of who we are. We want these vlogs to open a window into the word of Franny and Zooey.
